Sogda or Anki for German?

Anki is a flashcard app: you make your own decks, or download decks other users have shared. Sogda is a ready German course from A1 to C2, with 5,069 words, 182 grammar topics and 3 mock exams for every step, and both schedule your revision with spaced repetition.

What they share

Both bring a card back just before you'd forget it. Anki's manual describes FSRS, the Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler, as an alternative to its older SM-2 algorithm that you can turn on (Anki 23.10 and later, AnkiDroid 2.17 and later). Sogda schedules every word with FSRS from the start.

Choose Anki if…

Anki is the better fit when the cards are yours to make:

  • you want to make your own cards, for German or for anything else;
  • you already have a deck you trust, or want one from Anki's shared decks;
  • you want to set every scheduling option yourself;
  • you also study on a computer: Anki runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, with AnkiDroid on Android and AnkiMobile on iPhone.

Choose Sogda if…

Sogda is the better fit when you want the course, not the cards:

  • you want the whole course ready, from your first “Hallo” to C2: 5,069 words, each with examples, its article and forms where it has them, and 182 grammar topics, each with its rule and a short practice;
  • you want a plan for each day rather than decks to manage;
  • you want the meanings and a pronunciation guide in English, or in Bangla, Russian or Polish letters;
  • you're preparing for an exam: 3 mock exams for every step, with listening, writing and speaking, plus vocabulary and grammar;
  • you want it fully offline and with no account, on Android.

Or use both

Nothing stops you: take the course in Sogda, and keep an Anki deck for the words from your own work or studies that no course has.

Where these facts come from

Anki: its own manual at docs.ankiweb.net (Getting started; Deck options, on FSRS), read on 1 October 2026. Sogda: the app's course data. Anki is named here only to describe it; Sogda has no connection with it.

Questions, answered.

Does Sogda schedule like Anki?

Sogda uses FSRS, which Anki offers as an option from version 23.10; you turn it on in Anki's deck options. Anki's older SM-2 scheduler is what runs until you do.

Can I import my Anki deck into Sogda?

No. Sogda teaches its own course, so your Anki decks stay in Anki.

Which is better for the Goethe or telc exam?

With Anki, it depends on the deck. Sogda's steps are built around the exams, with 3 mock exams for every step that test listening, writing and speaking, plus vocabulary and grammar. They're not official papers, and there's no reading part.

Is Sogda on iPhone?

Not yet: Sogda is on Android (8.0 or newer), and iPhone is coming soon.
