Sogda or Duolingo for German?

Duolingo teaches many languages, and its German course goes through B2 on the CEFR scale, as Duolingo's blog said in April 2026. Sogda teaches only German, from A1 to C2 in 12 steps, with 5,069 words, 182 grammar topics and 3 mock exams for every step, fully offline and with no account.

How far each goes

The CEFR has six levels, from A1 to C2. Duolingo's German course reaches B2, where you're an “independent user” of the language. Sogda's 12 steps go on through C1 and C2, the levels of the Goethe-Zertifikat C1 and C2.

Choose Duolingo if…

Duolingo is the better fit when German is one language among several:

  • you want to learn other languages in the same app;
  • B2 is as far as you need to go in German;
  • you're on iPhone today: Sogda is on Android only, for now.

Choose Sogda if…

Sogda is the better fit when German is the goal:

  • you're aiming for C1 or C2, or for a Goethe or telc exam at any level: 3 mock exams for every step;
  • you want grammar as rules you can look up: 182 topics, each with its rule and a short practice;
  • you want every word with its article and forms where it has them, examples, and a pronunciation guide in your meaning language's letters;
  • you learn from Bangla, Russian or Polish and want the meanings in your language;
  • you want it fully offline, with no account to make.

Or use both

Nothing stops you: one app for variety, another for depth. Sogda's plan takes as long as the daily goal you set, so it fits beside another app.

Where these facts come from

Duolingo: its blog post “Duolingo Course Content Can Take You to B2 Proficiency”, 22 April 2026, read on 1 October 2026. Sogda: the app's course data. Duolingo is named here only to describe it; Sogda has no connection with it.
